Susan Caines RWA was born in 1935 in Bristol and studied at the West of England College of Art, specialising in painting. Her tutors included Paul Feiler and George Sweet. In 1956 Susan gained an Art Teacher’s diploma. Susan’s career as a teacher however was deferred for a time to bring up three children and she returned to painting in 1988.
Susan began painting full time in 1990, exploring various media, watercolour, etching, monoprint and oils. She was initially influenced by the flattened space and decorative qualities of the Quattrocento and primitive Sienese painting. Many visits to Italy provided inspiration for paintings and etchings, some developed in a subjective way. Images, visual memories, filtered in a personal response to the mellow and diffuse landscape, architecture and ambience of Italy.

While with an eye made quiet by the power
Of harmony, and the deep power of joy,
We see into the life of things.
